Notice Regarding Excessive Rainfall Event Starting on November 1, 2026 Northern is experiencing a significant, unanticipated extreme rainfall event that began on Friday, October 30th, continued through the weekend and is still ongoing. The unprecedented rainfall produced a three-day total of 17 to 24 inches across Northern's jurisdiction. Northern's Operations Staff has been working around the clock to monitor, operate and respond at all hours to issues created by this event. District staff continue to monitor and manage our stormwater systems and ensure optimum operation with as minimal impact as possible. We continued to experience roadway flooding, which the systems are designed to do in heavy rainfall events. Northern's operational capabilities include multiple pumping stations and operable gates, all operating at permitted capacity. Control gates were opened in accordance with the SFWMD Permit guidelines, and stormwater pumping stations were pumping stormwater to outfalls as permitted. Where stormwater systems are designed to discharge by gravity, Northern Staff is monitoring outfalls to ensure no blockages impede discharge. The systems are working as designed and intended; however, most receiving bodies are at or near capacity, and it will take time for the water to recede. Please ensure the road catch basins remain clear, and advise residents to drive carefully on flooded roads. Be mindful of wildlife in lakes and canals since the flooding has also displaced them. Once the significant rainfall has subsided, the systems will continue to discharge at the allowable rates and return to normal control elevations. We continue to work around the clock throughout this event and will provide additional updates as needed.
